Where is the Freedom Movement Heading?

Hashim Sabaghian, the Deputy Secretary-General and Vice President of the Central Council of the Freedom Movement of Iran, announced in a statement that Mohammad Tosli has been elected as the new Secretary-General of the group. The statement highlighted the passing of Ebrahim Yazdi and his activities within the Freedom Movement of Iran, emphasizing that the council elected Mohammad Tosli as Secretary-General on the 14th of Ordibehesht after Mr. Yazdi's health deteriorated. Mohammad Tosli has been the head of the political office of the Freedom Movement of Iran for many years and has been arrested several times in the past. He is 79 years old and was the first mayor of Tehran after the Islamic Revolution in Iran. Thus, throughout the 56-year history of the Freedom Movement of Iran, Mohammad Tosli is the third Secretary-General of this political organization after Mehdi Bazargan and Ebrahim Yazdi. In an interview with Radio Farda, Mehdi Nourbakhsh, a member of the Freedom Movement of Iran and a professor of political science and international relations at Harrisburg University in the United States, discussed Mohammad Tosli's background and the future activities of the Freedom Movement of Iran. He added that the Islamic Republic of Iran does not recognize the Freedom Movement as a legal entity, and this organization operates under restrictions. According to Mehdi Nourbakhsh, under these circumstances, the Freedom Movement is expected to serve as a 'witness' rather than an organization seeking power. Mr. Nourbakhsh also addressed critics' questions regarding the membership recruitment of the organization, the attention given to women, youth, religious minorities, and secularists in recruitment and political collaboration.
