Whistleblower of Pentagon Documents to be Tried in Military Court

Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, who has pleaded guilty in federal court to charges of leaking extensive U.S. national security documents online, will also be tried in military court for violating military laws. A spokesperson for the U.S. Air Force stated on Wednesday, July 18, that Mr. Teixeira will face charges of obstructing investigations and disobeying orders in military court. He added that this trial will take place at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts, but did not announce the start date. The 22-year-old Jack Teixeira, who was arrested last April, is responsible for the largest leak of U.S. military confidential information in recent times. The U.S. Air Force announced in May that after Mr. Teixeira accepted charges in federal court, it decided to file charges against him for violating military regulations. The whistleblower of Pentagon classified documents has accepted his charges. Mr. Teixeira's military attorney has not yet responded to the Air Force's decision. However, his civilian attorney stated in federal court in May that trying his client in both civil and military courts for committing a crime violates his rights. Despite being a junior officer serving in cyber defense support technology units, his access to classified information encompassed a wide range of U.S. Air Force data. Prosecutors' investigations show that he had access to sensitive information that was not directly within his responsibility since January 2022, including data related to Russia's military invasion of Ukraine. Last year, he sent a collection of U.S. military classified documents via the gaming messaging app 'Discord' to a group he was playing with. In a chat room, he shared parts of these classified documents with others and claimed to have access to 'sensitive information regarding Israel, Palestine, Iran, Syria, and China.' The federal court's ruling, which is reviewing the Justice Department's complaint against him, is set to be announced on September 27. Prosecutors have requested more than 16 years in prison for him, and legal experts predict that the minimum penalty the court will consider will be 11 years of imprisonment. The Air Force prosecutors have accused Jack Teixeira of ignoring and disobeying orders from military superiors to 'stop deep searching' in the archives of classified documents. The Air Force prosecutors state that he committed additional crimes by destroying his iPad, iPhone, and hard drive after the information leak was revealed and by asking others to delete internet contacts with him, which constitutes obstruction of investigations and justice.
