White House: Recent Cyber Operations by the Islamic Republic in the U.S. Serve as a New Warning to Strengthen Cybersecurity

A national security official at the White House said on Friday that the recent cyberattacks by hackers affiliated with the Iranian government on U.S. infrastructure, along with a separate wave of ransomware attacks on the healthcare industry, should be regarded as a new warning for companies and industries to enhance cybersecurity. According to the Associated Press, Anne Neuberger, Deputy National Security Advisor to President Biden, stated in an interview that the recent attacks on several American organizations by the Iranian hacker group Cyber Av3nger were not complex and had a 'minimal impact' on the water system. However, she emphasized that these recent attacks act as a new warning, indicating that American companies and operators overseeing critical infrastructure continue to face persistent and professional cyber threats from hostile nations and criminals, threats that show no signs of abating. Neuberger, who serves as a senior advisor to President Biden on cybersecurity and emerging technologies, stressed that 'some intrusion methods can make a significant difference, and we must lock our digital doors.' According to this senior White House security official, 'there are significant criminal threats as well as capable nations—especially in criminal threats—that impose substantial costs on our economy.' Earlier, U.S. and Israeli officials reported on December 3 that hackers affiliated with the Islamic Republic targeted several American organizations by sabotaging industrial control devices of the regional water authority in western Pennsylvania—equipment made in Israel. The FBI, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and the Israeli National Cyber Directorate reported in a statement sent to the Associated Press late Friday that this cyber intrusion has had a broader impact on various countries and industries. In this operation, the hacker group Cyber Av3ngers, affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, left a message stating that they consider Israeli-made equipment a 'legitimate target.' The damaged equipment includes industrial control tools used in various sectors such as energy, manufacturing, and healthcare. This cyber operation occurred amid heightened tensions between the United States and the Islamic Republic due to the two-month war between Israel and Hamas. The U.S. claims that hackers affiliated with the Islamic Republic targeted several organizations, and investigations are underway regarding the hacking of the water authority's system in Pennsylvania; a group supporting the Islamic Republic claimed responsibility for this attack. Axios reported that hackers supported by the Islamic Republic have increased their activities in the region. Israel stated that increased cyberattacks by the Islamic Republic will come at a 'cost.' The U.S. has offered a reward for information about the hacker group 'ImenNet Pasargad.' Iranian hackers are seeking secrets from American defense, satellite, and pharmaceutical companies. A cybersecurity company reported that Iranian hackers infiltrated 32 Israeli companies.
