Who is Abbas Nilfroushan, killed alongside Hassan Nasrallah?

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has confirmed the death of Abbas Nilfroushan, the Deputy Operations Commander of this military force of the Islamic Republic. Abbas Nilfroushan was killed on Friday afternoon, October 6, in an Israeli airstrike in the 'Dahiyeh' area, in the southern suburbs of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon; the same attack that led to the death of Hassan Nasrallah, the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, and several other commanders of this group, which is supported by the Islamic Republic and recognized as terrorist by the United States. Abbas Nilfroushan was born in 1966 in Isfahan. He joined the Basij force in 1980 and then the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Mr. Nilfroushan participated in the Iran-Iraq War. In 2005, he was appointed as the Deputy Operations Commander of the Revolutionary Guard and held this position until 2007. In 2010, he became the head of the Command and Staff College of the Revolutionary Guard, a position he held until 2014. He also served as the deputy commander of the Imam Hussein Headquarters and the deputy of operations of the Revolutionary Guard. In 2019, Abbas Nilfroushan was appointed as the Deputy Operations Commander of the Revolutionary Guard. In a decree issued by Hossein Salami, the commander of the Revolutionary Guard, he replaced Mohammad Reza Zahdi in this position; a commander who was a senior commander of the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guard and was killed on April 1, 2024, in an airstrike attributed to Israel on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, the capital of Syria. The U.S. Department of Treasury sanctioned Abbas Nilfroushan in 2022 following the 'Women, Life, Freedom' protests due to his direct role in suppressing protesters that year and prior. The Islamic Republic of Iran's television introduced Abbas Nilfroushan in 2020 as a 'comrade of Qassem Soleimani,' the former commander of the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guard, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike on January 3, 2020, near Baghdad International Airport. Nilfroushan stated in an interview with state television that Israel does not have the capability to threaten Iran. Iranian government-affiliated media have reported on Abbas Nilfroushan's role in assisting the Islamic Republic's proxy groups, especially Hezbollah. According to reports, he had an active presence in military and diplomatic planning for the Islamic Republic's proxy groups, including playing a central role in coordinating among these groups.
