Widespread Disqualification of Students in the Scientific Association Elections at Shahid Beheshti University

On Friday, November 5, the National Student Guild Council reported extensive and illegal disqualifications of students in the scientific association elections at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran. In a report on their Telegram channel, the council wrote that pressures and illegal interventions by the university's security have now affected student scientific associations. According to the report, many candidates who had been approved for the elections of the scientific associations of the faculties have been removed from the final list. The council emphasized that most of the disqualified candidates had no disciplinary convictions and met all legal conditions for registration and candidacy in the student scientific association elections. The National Student Guild Council indicated that the probable reason for the widespread disqualifications was 'political and student activities or non-compliance with the university's dress code.' This widespread disqualification has occurred despite the law stating that the cultural vice-presidency should only recognize the votes of the university's disciplinary committee for approvals, which, according to the report, has not been adhered to. The report stressed that the removal of all student organizations has been put on the agenda of the Ministry of Science. Additionally, the National Student Guild Council reported the continuation of a wave of expulsions and suspensions of student activists at the beginning of the new academic year. These pressures have intensified since the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of the morality police last September and the widespread participation of students in those protests. The council announced that due to pressures from the security at Allameh Tabatabai University, Hamid Saif, a student activist and doctoral student in communication sciences at the university, has been deprived of his studies. This student was arrested during last year's protests. Earlier, on October 12, student sources reported the expulsion of Matin Faramarzpour, a master's student in Western philosophy, from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. In recent months, several students have faced academic deprivations, forced changes of study locations, or expulsions from universities. Additionally, several students have been arrested and imprisoned on security charges.
