Widespread Fire in California Continues

A large fire in the state of California, USA, has claimed the lives of at least five people. The blaze, which has been ongoing for six days, has left at least 14 people missing and forced tens of thousands to evacuate their homes. Police in Northern California are searching for the 14 missing individuals. Over 38,000 residents of the city of Redding have been asked to leave their homes. Approximately 3,400 firefighters and at least 17 water-dropping helicopters are involved in efforts to extinguish the fire and prevent its spread to other areas. The deaths of five individuals have been confirmed; among them are three members of a family, including a grandmother and two children. A bulldozer driver who was assisting firefighters in extinguishing the blaze is another victim from Saturday, August 6. Earlier, the California Fire Department had reported that two firefighters lost their lives while combating the fire around the city of Redding. Nine individuals have been hospitalized, three of whom are firefighters. The Associated Press reports that at least 500 structures have been destroyed, the air is filled with smoke and chemical odors, and remnants of the fire continue to burn, preventing inspections. Despite efforts to contain the fire, reports indicate that only five percent of the fire's extent has been controlled so far. Meanwhile, weather reports indicate that the weather will be dry and hot in the coming days, which is bad news for firefighters and rescuers on the ground. The recent fire in California is one of dozens of fires across the state. Reuters reports that nearly 90 fires have occurred in the southern and western United States, from Texas to Oregon. The large California fire has covered an area of approximately 36,000 hectares, or 360 square kilometers.
