Widespread Protests in Israel Following the Death of Six More Hamas Hostages

In response to the killing of six more hostages by the Palestinian group Hamas in the Gaza Strip, widespread protests took place in Israel on Sunday, September 2. Protesters are demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu take further action to secure the return of the remaining 101 hostages, about a third of whom, according to Israeli officials, have been killed. In Jerusalem, the capital, protesters blocked some streets and demonstrated in front of the Prime Minister's residence. Aerial images showed the main highway in Tel Aviv filled with protesters. Israeli television footage also showed police using special water cannons to disperse demonstrators who had blocked roads. Israeli domestic media reported that 29 people had been arrested by the time of this report. Meanwhile, labor leaders declared Monday a one-day general strike. The ongoing war in Gaza began on October 7 of last year with a terrorist attack by Hamas, which is supported by the Islamic Republic, resulting in the deaths and abduction of hundreds. The reaction of U.S. lawmakers to the killing of Israeli hostages; Lindsey Graham stated that the Iranian government should be held accountable. The Israeli ambassador to the UN said that dealing with armed groups in the Middle East must include confronting the Iranian government.
