Widespread Protests Over the Rape and Murder of a Young Doctor in India; Hundreds of Thousands of Doctors Strike

Protests began after a 31-year-old intern was raped and murdered while resting in a seminar hall of a government hospital. This crime recalls the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old student on a moving bus in Delhi in 2012, which led to widespread demonstrations. The Indian Medical Association, the largest group of doctors in the country, stated that the 24-hour strike, which began at 6 AM on Saturday, has halted access to non-emergency surgeries and outpatient treatments. Sanjeev Singh Yadav, a representative of this association in the southern state of Telangana, told Reuters, 'All doctors are on strike, so it can be said that 90 percent of doctors are participating in the strike.' A volunteer police officer working in the hospital has been arrested in connection with the rape, but the victim's family believes it was a gang rape involving more individuals. An autopsy confirmed sexual assault. The case has been handed over to federal investigators after state police officers were accused of 'mismanagement' in conducting the investigation. Earlier on Wednesday, August 24, thousands of women protested across India, demanding justice for the victim. The protesting doctors say this attack highlights the vulnerability of doctors working in hospitals and medical centers across India without adequate security measures. They are also calling for stricter laws to protect healthcare staff from violence. Following the gang rape of a student in Delhi in 2012, the Indian government made extensive changes to its criminal justice system, including imposing heavier penalties, but activists say the system has not changed much and is insufficient to prevent the rising tide of violence against women. In 2022, Indian police recorded 31,516 reports of sexual assault, a 20 percent increase from 2021, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau. Doctors and women's rights activists are demanding a swift investigation into the rape of this young doctor in Kolkata, stating that stricter laws should be enacted and enforced while this crime is fresh in the public's mind.
