Widespread Wildfires Continue in Los Angeles; Tens of Thousands Forced to Evacuate

A new wave of wildfires has engulfed parts of northeastern Los Angeles. Previously, another fire in the Pacific Palisades area near Santa Monica along the ocean coast led to the destruction of numerous homes and the issuance of evacuation orders for tens of thousands. The fire began around 6:30 PM local time on Tuesday, January 8, near a protected area and spread so rapidly that staff at a senior care center had to evacuate residents using wheelchairs or even hospital mattresses to the parking lot, from where ambulances transported them to safer areas. In the western part of the city, the fire that started on Tuesday morning in Pacific Palisades remained uncontrolled by nightfall. This area is considered affluent in Los Angeles, home to many prominent figures. The Los Angeles Fire Department has called all off-duty firefighters back to work to combat the ongoing blaze. Efforts to control the fire have been hampered by extremely strong winds, reaching speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour, making the use of firefighting aircraft impossible. The mass evacuation of residents from the affected areas has caused heavy traffic on highways, complicating the movement of emergency vehicles. The fire department had to use a bulldozer to clear abandoned vehicles from the highway. California Governor Gavin Newsom, who was attending an official event in the southern part of the state, cut his trip short to return to his office to oversee the situation. Newsom confirmed witnessing the destruction of numerous structures. No official statistics on the extent of damage or destruction have been released yet, but around 30,000 residents of Pacific Palisades have received evacuation orders, and 13,000 buildings have been declared at risk. The intensity of the winds has also contributed to the spread of the fire and power outages in various parts of Los Angeles and throughout Southern California. Power has been cut to at least 28,000 homes, and approximately half a million residents face potential power outages. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved special funding to assist in firefighting efforts in California. President Joe Biden also issued a statement emphasizing ongoing communication with local officials in California and readiness to provide any federal assistance to combat the fires in the state. The dry winds, including those known as Santa Anas, have increased temperatures in Southern California, which has seen very little rainfall in recent months. Over the past eight months, only about 2.5 millimeters of rain has fallen in these areas, leading to excessive dryness and readiness for rapid fire spread.
