Wife of Mohsen Mazloom, One of Four Political Prisoners: Do Not Let Them Be Hanged

The wife of Mohsen Mazloom, one of four Kurdish political prisoners sentenced to death, has issued a plea for help to save the lives of these prisoners. Joanna Timasi called on "all freedom lovers, human rights organizations, the international community, and the people of Iran" to take all necessary actions to save these four prisoners at risk of execution and not allow the Islamic Republic to execute them "in secrecy and ignorance." She emphasized that the Iranian government's "unjust courts" issued death sentences for her husband and three other Kurdish political prisoners in "absolute silence and ignorance." Recently, the news agency of the Human Rights Activists in Iran, "Hrana," reported the issuance of death sentences for four members of the Kurdish "Komala" party, named Mohsen Mazloom, Pejman Fatehi, Vafa Azarbar, and Hajir Farahmand. They were arrested on July 23, 2022, in Urmia by agents of the "FARAJA" intelligence organization. The wife of Mohsen Mazloom also reported that these four political defendants were deprived of their "basic rights" as political prisoners during their 18 months of detention, stating that they had no access to an independent lawyer and no right to contact or meet with their families. Joanna Timasi rejected the Islamic Republic's claim of "espionage" against these four Kurdish prisoners for Israel, calling it "far from reality" and stated that her husband and his three friends had no connection with Israel. Previously, the "FARAJA" intelligence organization had described the charges against these individuals as "espionage for a foreign country." According to Mohsen Mazloom's wife, these four Kurdish prisoners sentenced to death are merely "political activists and opponents of the dictatorial regime of the Islamic Republic." She urged the people of Iran not to leave the families of these four death row inmates alone and to support them. Golestan Arzhangi, the wife of Vafa Azarbar, another political prisoner sentenced to death in this case, also recently called for support from the people of Iran and the international community to save her husband, labeling the trial of these four political prisoners as "completely unjust." Abram Pili, the deputy special representative of the United States for Iran, condemned the death sentences for these four Iranian Kurdish citizens on Thursday, January 12. The Iran Human Rights Organization also condemned the issuance of death sentences for these four political prisoners and called for an appropriate response from the international community to the arbitrary executions in Iran. According to Amnesty International, the officials of the Islamic Republic use the death penalty as a tool to suppress minorities, protesters, and opponents while simultaneously restricting the access of ethnic and religious minorities to education, employment, and political positions.
