Wildfire on the Island of Rhodes, Greece; Widespread Evacuations Continue

As the extensive wildfire continues to rage through the forests on the island of Rhodes, widespread evacuations of people from land and sea are ongoing. According to officials, the forest fire that has been active on the island for the past five days has forced hundreds to flee from affected villages and beaches. Over two thousand people, including tourists, have escaped from the southeastern shores of the island using coast guard ships and private boats. Additionally, as the flames approach the villages of Pifki, Lindos, and Kalathos, thousands more have been asked to leave these villages. Reuters reports that the evacuation of residents has resulted in no human casualties from the fire. While firefighters, supported by aerial assistance and reinforcements from Slovakia, are trying to contain the blaze, strong winds are spreading the flames and expanding the fire. The Associated Press also reported that the European Union has dispatched firefighters and firefighting aircraft from other countries to assist the people and confront the wildfires in Greece. Experts believe that the heatwave and high temperatures increase the risk of wildfires, and Greece has become a hotspot for forest fires in recent years. The Greek government has activated crisis management and requested foreign aid to address the consequences of this crisis. Earlier this year, in April, a forest fire at the border of Spain and France destroyed over 750 hectares of forest.
