With Increased Hopes for a Ceasefire in Gaza, Blinken Travels to Tel Aviv to Meet Israeli Leaders

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is traveling to Tel Aviv to meet with Israeli leaders following two days of ceasefire talks in Doha. According to AFP, Blinken arrived in the Middle East on Saturday, August 18, to advance a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, amidst reports of a "cautious optimism" for reaching some form of agreement. After two days of ceasefire discussions facilitated by President Joe Biden and in cooperation with Egypt and Qatar in Doha, Blinken flew from Andrews Air Force Base. This senior U.S. diplomat has postponed his vacation for his ninth trip to the Middle East since Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and is set to meet with Israeli leaders. U.S. officials stated that progress has been made and a proposal to bridge gaps between Israel and Hamas has been presented, with negotiations expected to resume next week in Cairo. Biden previously stated, "We are closer to an agreement than ever," while an American official noted that the process is still in its "final stage." This official, who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity, indicated that diplomats are creating an "executive unit" to expedite the agreement once completed. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that negotiators have expressed "cautious optimism" about reaching an agreement and called for increased pressure on Hamas, which has "dismissed claims of being close to a ceasefire." According to a plan announced by the U.S. President on May 31, the war will be paused for six weeks during which negotiations for a permanent resolution will take place, and hostages and prisoners will be released. While Biden has presented this agreement as an achievement for Israel, Netanyahu faces severe criticism from his far-right allies who keep his government in power. AFP analyzes that "this ceasefire agreement would be a significant achievement for Biden" as his Democratic Party plans to hold its convention in Chicago this week to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as its candidate. According to the report, Palestinian activists in Chicago have promised protests, as they are angered by what they see as excessive support from the Biden administration for Israel; a government that has recently approved an additional $20 billion arms sale to Israel. In Gaza, controlled by Hamas, officials have reported that over 40,000 people have lost their lives, and in a recent airstrike, 15 members of one family were killed. The war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7 of last year when this Islamist group, backed by the Islamic Republic, attacked Israeli border areas, killing over 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking around 250 hostages to Gaza. Tensions in the Middle East have escalated in recent days, with speculation about a direct attack by the Islamic Republic and its proxy forces on Israel and the further expansion of the war in the region becoming media headlines.
