World Leaders to Attend 80th Anniversary of Auschwitz Liberation

On Monday, February 8, during the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp, several world leaders and members of royal families from various countries will join a commemorative ceremony for the survivors of Nazi Germany's crimes. The White House has announced that Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has appointed a delegation to represent him at the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland. Steve Witkoff, the U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs, and Howard Lutnick, Trump's nominee for Secretary of Commerce, will lead this delegation. According to the Associated Press, Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of Germany, and Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the President of Germany, will also attend the ceremony. Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, and Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, are among other participants in this ceremony. Charles III, the King of the United Kingdom, who has worked for years to remember the Holocaust, will attend the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp along with other European royal family members, including the King of Spain. Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, was the guest of honor at the 60th anniversary of this event in 2005 to highlight the role of the former Soviet Union in the liberation of Auschwitz. However, since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Putin will not be welcomed. Additionally, the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has raised questions regarding the attendance of Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, at this ceremony. The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Mr. Netanyahu last November, accusing him of 'crimes against humanity' due to Israel's actions in Gaza. This move has faced strong criticism from Israel. In this context, member countries of this court, including Poland, are obliged to arrest individuals who have arrest warrants if they enter their territory. Nevertheless, the Polish government passed a resolution committing to ensure the safe participation of senior Israeli officials in this ceremony. Israel intends to send its Minister of Education, Yoav Kisch, to the event. The main ceremony will take place in southern Poland, where Nazi Germany killed over a million people, mostly Jews. Hitler's ideological crimes also targeted other groups, including Poles, Soviet Red Army prisoners of war, and homosexuals. The 80th anniversary of Auschwitz has garnered more attention due to the advanced age of the survivors and the awareness that they will no longer be present in the world. The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum expects about 50 survivors of Auschwitz and other death camps to participate in the ceremony on Monday afternoon. The United Nations has designated January 27 of each year as 'International Holocaust Remembrance Day' to commemorate the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp. During World War II, six million Jews were killed by Nazi German forces and their allies. Nazi officials established the Auschwitz camp in 1940 after invading Poland in the town of Oświęcim. This camp was initially used to hold Polish prisoners, including Catholic priests and members of Polish underground resistance groups. The Germans later established about 40 camps in the area, but the most infamous of them is Birkenau, which was used for mass killings in gas chambers. On January 27, 1946, Soviet Red Army forces reached the gates of Auschwitz and found about 7,000 prisoners in dire physical conditions there. Today, this site is home to a museum and memorial operated by the Polish government and is one of Poland's most visited locations. Statistics show that in 2024, over 1.83 million people visited this camp. Auschwitz is etched in the global collective memory as a symbol of all Nazi crimes and an example of what hatred, racism, and anti-Semitism represent. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom stated on International Holocaust Remembrance Day: 'The victims must always remain in our memories.' The Holocaust memorial ceremony will be held in Poland with the presence of prominent officials and figures from around the world. The oldest French survivor of the Auschwitz camp has passed away. The World Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony was held in the U.S. and around the world. A tribute was paid to Abdolhossein Sardari; an Iranian hero who saved hundreds of Jews. The remains of several Holocaust victims were buried.
