The first day of the World Weightlifting Championships in 2003 in Vancouver, Canada concluded with the victory of Chinese lightweight lifter, Mijin Wu. According to the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA), the 73rd edition of the men's World Weightlifting Championships and the 16th edition of the women's World Weightlifting Championships began at the Canada Place stadium in Vancouver with the competition of 35 lifters in the men's 56 kg category across various groups. The official opening ceremony of the championships was held after five rounds of competition among different groups, attended by officials from Canada's sports sector, the International Weightlifting Federation, the organizers of the event, and participating teams. In this ceremony, Tamas Ajan, the president of the International Weightlifting Federation, welcomed the participants and noted the positive doping test results of three Bulgarian lifters before the competition, stating that the entry of 'Vanf', 'Markov', and 'Boyevski', three Bulgarian lifters, was prevented. The competition for the men's 56 kg lifters in Group A then commenced, concluding with Mijin Wu achieving a total lift of 287.5 kg to win the gold medal. Wu lifted 127.5 kg in the snatch to secure the gold medal and also won gold in the clean and jerk with a lift of 160 kg. Following Wu, 33-year-old Romanian lifter Adrian Jigou achieved a total of 280 kg to win the silver medal. Jigou placed fifth in the snatch with a lift of 125 kg but secured a bronze medal in the clean and jerk with a lift of 155 kg. Turkish lifter Sedat Artuk also won a bronze medal with a total lift of 277.5 kg. Artuk achieved a silver medal in the snatch with a lift of 125 kg and placed fourth in the clean and jerk with a lift of 152.5 kg. Additionally, in this weight category, Chinese lifter Lujin Bi won a bronze medal in the snatch with a lift of 125 kg due to body weight differences. Wang Shinyang from Chinese Taipei claimed the silver medal in the clean and jerk with a lift of 155 kg. Turkish lifter Halil Mutlu, who now competes in a higher weight class, holds the world record in this category with a total of 305 kg (138.5 kg in the snatch and 168 kg in the clean and jerk). Iran does not have representatives in the 56 kg and 62 kg categories. The second day of the World Weightlifting Championships in 2003 will also commence tonight with the competition of male lifters in the 62 kg category in Group B. On this day, champions in the men's 62 kg and women's 48 kg categories will also be recognized.
