Yasmin Ansari; Young Iranian-American Woman on the Brink of Entering the U.S. Congress

Yasmin Ansari, a former member of the Phoenix City Council, defeated her opponent by 39 votes after a tight race that led to a recount, and was selected as the Democratic nominee for one of Arizona's congressional districts. In a post on her social media, she thanked the voters, writing: "As the daughter of immigrants who taught me how to organize, I am very grateful to the thousands of voters who believed in our campaign and our positive message about achieving progressive results." Yasmin Ansari is 33 years old and was born into an Iranian family in Arizona. Her social media posts show that she takes pride in her Iranian heritage and strives to introduce non-Iranians to Iranian culture and traditions, having organized Nowruz celebrations in the heart of Phoenix for several consecutive years. Following the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of the morality police and the nationwide protests of 'Women, Life, Freedom,' Ansari also posted multiple times regarding this issue and, as a member of the Phoenix City Council, collaborated with Farnaz Zabetian, an Iranian artist residing in San Francisco, and several other Iranian artists to create a mural in support of the protests in Iran in District 7 of the city. Arizona is one of the most critical states in the U.S. for the upcoming presidential election in November. Phoenix is the capital of Arizona and is located in the central region of the state. It is the fifth-largest city in the U.S. Yasmin Ansari will compete against Republican Jeff Zink in the general election in November. Zink previously lost to Democrat Ruben Gallego in his attempt to secure a congressional seat in 2022. Zink is a pastor and is reported to have been present outside the Capitol during the January 6, 2021, attack alongside his son. He has denied allegations against his son and questioned the results of the 2020 presidential election, in which Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump.
