Yemen's Prime Minister Dismissed

Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, the President of Yemen, announced on Monday, October 15, the dismissal of Ahmed bin Dagher, the Prime Minister of Yemen, due to his failure to resolve the economic crisis in the war-torn country. According to Reuters, the statement mentioned that Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed has been appointed as the new Prime Minister, and an investigation into the negligence and shortcomings of Ahmed bin Dagher's cabinet will continue. The UN has warned of the potential for the worst famine of the century in Yemen. The report states that Yemen, which has been embroiled in war since 2015, is considered one of the poorest Arab countries, with three-quarters of its 22 million population in need of assistance and 8.4 million people at risk of famine. Parts of northern Yemen and the capital, Sana'a, are controlled by the Shiite Houthi militants, while government forces backed by Saudi Arabia and the UAE, along with southern Yemeni separatists, control parts of the south. The Yemeni President's statement indicated that Ahmed bin Dagher was dismissed due to negligence and shortcomings in economic matters and administrative services. Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed was previously the Minister of Public Services in Ahmed bin Dagher's cabinet, which has been based in Saudi Arabia since last year. Reuters reports that Ahmed bin Dagher had faced severe disagreements with the UAE-backed Yemeni separatists in recent months. According to the report, most Yemenis reside in areas controlled by the Houthis, while the government of Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi controls parts of the south. Reports indicate that the Yemeni rial has lost half of its value since the war began. The Yemeni government's efforts to counter the collapse of the national currency have so far yielded no results. Martin Griffiths, the UN envoy for Yemen, previously stated that the UN is seeking an emergency program to assist Yemen's economy. According to the United Nations, over 10,000 people have been killed and more than two million displaced during the Yemen war.
