Zelensky Announced Ukraine's Agreement to Easter Ceasefire and Accused Russia of Violating It

Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, announced his country's agreement to a 30-hour ceasefire proposed by Moscow for Easter, while accusing Russia of violating this ceasefire with various drone and artillery attacks. Separately, Kyiv and Moscow reported on April 30 a significant exchange of prisoners of war, with over 200 individuals exchanged from each side. Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, announced the ceasefire proposal during a televised meeting with the country's senior military commander on Saturday, April 30. He stated that the temporary ceasefire would be from 6 PM Saturday to midnight Sunday Moscow time and told Valery Gerasimov, the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, 'We assume that the Ukrainian side will adhere to our pattern.' Zelensky immediately described his Russian counterpart's action as 'another attempt by Putin to play with human lives' and wrote on social media platform X on Saturday night that the drone attacks in our skies reveal Putin's true approach to Easter and human lives. He also emphasized that a short period like 30 hours indicates Vladimir Putin's lack of seriousness in establishing a ceasefire and suggested that this period be extended to 30 days. Zelensky added, 'This is what reveals Russia's true intentions; because 30 hours is enough for a news headline, but it is not suitable for real confidence-building measures.' The recent proposal by Putin comes as Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, and several other American officials expressed dissatisfaction with the slow progress in peace negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, which has now entered its fourth year. Trump stated on April 18 that negotiations between Ukraine and Russia have reached a 'critical point' and emphasized that neither side is 'going around' him in their efforts to end the conflict. Meanwhile, Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, warned that the U.S. might abandon efforts to reach a peace agreement if there is no progress in the coming days. Putin has previously proposed ceasefires during holidays; in January 2023, he ordered a 36-hour ceasefire for Orthodox Christmas. However, Zelensky described this Russian call as an attempt to buy time for military replenishment. On the battlefield, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that its forces have managed to push Ukrainian soldiers back from one of the last remaining villages under their control in the Kursk region, which Ukraine had attacked over eight months ago. Kyiv has not yet commented on the claim of recapturing the village of 'Olshania' in the border region of Kursk. However, if confirmed, this advance could bring Russian forces closer to completely driving Ukrainian troops out of the Kursk region, which has been a continuous embarrassment for the Kremlin.
