Zelensky Cancels Virtual Meeting with U.S. Congress Members

Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, canceled a virtual meeting scheduled for Tuesday with members of the U.S. Congress. This meeting was intended to request continued military assistance and support from the U.S. amid the Russian invasion. The Ukrainian President was supposed to speak to U.S. Senators to persuade them to urgently approve the new budget requested by the Biden administration to aid Ukraine. The cancellation of this meeting complicates efforts to secure new aid for Ukraine. The U.S. had previously requested a $106 billion budget for Ukraine, which faced opposition from some Republican members of the House of Representatives. Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader, reacted to the cancellation by stating, 'Zelensky was unable to reach the congressional briefing at the last moment.' Schumer noted that Zelensky was invited so that American lawmakers could 'hear directly from him what exactly is at stake' and make decisions regarding the new aid bill for Ukraine. Republican leaders in the U.S. Congress announced on Tuesday that any new aid to Ukraine must be accompanied by significant changes to U.S. immigration policies. This condition poses a challenge to the Biden administration's billion-dollar budget request for assistance to Ukraine in its war with Russia. According to Reuters, Republicans and Democrats in the Senate and House have been debating for weeks over Biden's $106 billion request for Ukraine, Israel, U.S. border security, and U.S. interests in the Indo-Pacific. Mike Johnson, the Republican Speaker of the House, stated that the budget for aid to Ukraine should be linked to 'fundamental changes' in U.S. immigration policy, including ending asylum requests at the southern U.S. border.
