Zelensky Dismisses Army Recruitment Center Heads Due to Corruption

Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, on Friday escalated the fight against corruption by dismissing all heads of recruitment centers. Zelensky stated that government investigations across Ukraine had revealed numerous violations by the dismissed officials, ranging from embezzlement to the transfer of eligible men across borders despite a ban on leaving the country during wartime. He mentioned that 112 criminal cases had been opened in a broad investigation that began after an embezzlement scandal at a military recruitment center in the Odessa region last month. According to Reuters, he used strong language that is likely to resonate with Ukrainians who are shocked by instances of corruption during wartime. Zelensky said, "This system must be run by people who know exactly what war is and why cynicism and bribery during wartime are treason." He added that veterans and injured soldiers would replace the dismissed officials. Ukraine has prioritized combating corruption due to the full-scale Russian invasion and its goal of EU membership, dismissing or prosecuting many high-ranking officials for this reason. Zelensky stated, "Any dismissed officer at military recruitment centers who has not been interrogated must go to the front to fight for Ukraine if they want to keep their rank and prove their honor." Last month, the head of the military recruitment center in the Odessa region was arrested on charges of embezzlement. Ukrainian media reports indicate that his family owns luxurious properties in Spain. Zelensky mentioned that General Valery Zaluzhny would be responsible for implementing Friday's decision, and new candidates for the positions of the dismissed officials would first be vetted by Ukraine's internal security service. According to Reuters, despite recent actions against corruption, Ukraine still ranks 116th out of 180 countries in the Transparency International index. A survey by this organization in June showed that 77% of Ukrainians believe corruption is one of Ukraine's most serious problems. Zelensky was elected in 2019 with a promise to combat corruption.
