Zelensky on the Front Line: We Captured Another Settlement from Russia

Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, announced the capture of another settlement during his visit to the front line in a border area where Ukrainian forces entered Russia over two weeks ago. Meanwhile, Russia also reported that its forces had captured a village in eastern Ukraine. Kyiv also stated that it targeted an airbase in southern Russia with a drone attack. This attack occurred amid reports that Russian forces are gradually advancing on the eastern front. Russia claims to have thwarted Ukrainian attempts to penetrate another border area, different from where Ukrainian forces previously breached into Russia on August 7. This attack took place approximately 240 kilometers from where Ukraine attacked Kursk in western Russia. Analysts suggest that this attack may indicate Ukraine's intention to extend the war into more border areas. After about a year without significant achievements, Ukrainian forces unexpectedly entered Kursk by crossing the Russian border on August 7. Meanwhile, Russia claims to have begun installing concrete shelters in Kursk. Moscow alleges that Ukraine is planning an attack on the Kursk nuclear power plant, which Ukraine has dismissed as 'foolish' propaganda. The Russian Defense Ministry warned that an attack on this power plant would have severe consequences. Since the beginning of operations in Kursk, Kyiv claims to have achieved many successes; however, Moscow has also been advancing in eastern Ukraine for months, putting additional pressure on Ukrainian forces that have been defending since the onset of the Russian invasion in March 2022. On Thursday, September 1, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that its forces had captured the village of Mzhovoye in eastern Donetsk, Ukraine. Reuters, which reported this news, stated that it cannot independently verify the claims of both sides on the battlefield. While Ukraine reports further advances by its forces, Russia has repeatedly claimed that Ukrainian attacks on its territory have ceased. Zelensky stated that during his visit to the border area of 'Sumy,' he met with Oleksandr Syrskiy, the senior commander of Ukrainian forces, and videos of this meeting have been released, although the timing of the meeting is unclear. The Ukrainian President stated that civilian casualties in 'Sumy' have decreased since the start of operations in Kursk. He also mentioned that Ukrainian forces captured another village. Ukrainian officials had previously announced that Kyiv had brought over 90 settlements under control in that area. The Ukrainian Defense Minister told a delegation of U.S. Congress representatives visiting the area that Kyiv's attack on Kursk was aimed at 'protecting Ukraine.'
