Zelensky's Presence at UK Cabinet Meeting; Calls for Long-Range Missile Strikes on Russia

Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, attended a UK cabinet meeting on Friday, July 19, urging continued support from Ukraine's Western allies to counter Russia's military aggression. Zelensky's speech to the government ministers marks a rare appearance of a foreign leader at a UK cabinet meeting. New UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer hopes to emphasize London's support for Kyiv through this engagement. Following his hosting of a European leaders' summit at Blenheim Palace, Starmer continues his efforts to enhance the UK's role in international affairs by inviting Zelensky to speak at the senior ministers' meeting. According to the UK Prime Minister's Office, the last foreign leader to attend a UK cabinet meeting was former US President Bill Clinton. Zelensky received a warm welcome from British ministers and reiterated his call for Western allies to allow Kyiv to strike desired targets in Russia using long-range missiles. He urged the UK to work on convincing Ukraine's Western partners to lift current restrictions. NATO members have differing approaches regarding how Ukraine can use the weapons provided to it. Some say Kyiv can strike its desired targets in Russia with missiles, while the US has taken a more limited stance, stating that Ukraine can only attack targets in Russia that are involved in military operations against it. Keir Starmer met with Zelensky before the cabinet meeting and promised that London would expedite its aid delivery to Ukraine. The new Prime Minister emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine, stating that the assistance promised by the previous Conservative government would be delivered swiftly. Since Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, the UK has been a staunch supporter of the country. After a decisive victory in the recent UK elections, Starmer reiterated his commitment to supporting Kyiv and told Zelensky at the NATO summit that despite the change in government, there would be no change in London's policy towards Ukraine. On Thursday, he announced that the UK would pursue a new plan to disrupt Russia's attempts to evade shipping sanctions. The Prime Minister also unveiled a defense export support treaty that is set to be signed by the defense ministers of both countries. This plan will allow Ukraine to utilize about $4.5 billion from export financing to strengthen the defense industrial bases of both countries and increase production.
